Fashion For Life!

Hi all!
This weekend Fashion for Life opens it’s doors (all 9 islands!!!) and with that kicks off the fund raising efforts for SL Relay for Life and the American Cancer Society for 2011. It’s been a while since I’ve had the honor and privilege to be part of any fundraising efforts for RFL (at least as a contributer) in SL. I am glad to have been invited and to be participating in Fashion For Life. Not only did they allow me to sponsor one of the sims, the Bourke White sim (built by the talented Syngen Sohmers), but they also let me have a store!! In addition to sponsoring I have donated 4 of my items with 100% profits going toward the charity and also an item for the Fashion For Life Hunt! You’ll see in the pictures below that they aren’t all brand new items, but they are new colors or color packs.

The color packs for the hairstyles are my “Essential Collection” and “Exclusive Collection” combined for a total of 12 hair tones. They are available for L$400 each (with 100% going toward the American Cancer Society). The 2 shoes are recolors and will be exclusive and limited to this event. They are available for L$250 (again with 100% being donated). Here are the pics.

The Hye hairstyle is something new and there is actually a little bit of a back story. I was initially building it as a 2nd version for a hairstyle in my previous hair release “Just” but as I was building it I realized it reminded me of someone. I didn’t think I was working from a picture when I was making it, but maybe in some subconscious way I was. It reminded me of this photo I have of my mother when she was 18 years old. So I decided I’d hold onto this hairstyle to donate it and also to name it after her.

My mom lost her battle with lung cancer over 10 years ago…..actually a week ago I celebrated what would have been her 65th birthday. Its heart breaking to think about how little time I had with her after she was diagnosed. Cancer is unforgiving and it pains me to share that she suffered….tremendously. But even though she knew she was losing….she was a fighter! A small, tiny, five-foot-nothing FIGHTER! She never gave up hope that someday there would be a cure. Maybe not in her lifetime, but she hoped in mine and in my children’s.

She is the main reason why I make an effort every year to give at least a little something to American Cancer Society in real life…..and she is definitely the motivating and inspiring force of why I try to involve myself (in some way) with the fundraising efforts in Second Life. Not only because I miss her terribly, but because her courage and strong will to live and fight, even when she knew she was losing, gave me hope that some day there will be a cure. I don’t think I know anyone, not in real life or second life, that hasn’t been touched in some way by cancer. Whether a family member, close friend, co-worker, friend of a friend, or yourself…..in some way I think we’ve all been affected. And the one thing I’ve learned in the 10+ years that I’ve been personally affected is that cancer research saves lives. It’s that simple.
